 Permanent PCB Materials (06/2004)
Welcome to the latest edition of The Board Authority brought to you by CircuiTree, the premier media and resource center for the global printed circuit industry. Our theme is Permanent Materials, now at the epicenter of change catalyzed by the greatest demands ever. What are the circuitry materials challenges? Forces for materials advancement include higher temperatures for lead-free soldering, escalating assault by regulators, materials to enable novel processes and designs, and new requirements for higher levels of circuit performances.
Circuitry continues to evolve under the forces of miniaturization, superior performance and price pressures in a fast changing global economy. Materials have become even more crucial to achieve greater densification, higher frequency, facilitating newer processes, and the move towards halogen-free products. Circuit materials must provide the required properties, enable advanced designs, and meet a worldwide hodgepodge of regulations. But its performance and newer technologies is where we’ll place most of our effort.
We are therefore please to offer the Permanent Materials series from an international class of experts. We’ll start off by examining the real impact of lead-free and learn more about the collateral damage from higher soldering temperatures. Will lead-free make lower Tg laminates obsolete? Can simple changes in laminate curatives boost performance? We’ll get the inside story from laminate materials experts. And we’ll also demystify CAF to help you avoid pitfalls and errors.
